Excitement Builds as Leadership Conference Nears
The 43rd Annual PAEC Leadership Conference will soon be here! The conference will be broadcast live on the Florida Education Channel from PAEC in Chipley, and will reach every district in Florida and beyond. Preparations for viewing at district satellite sites are being completed, and outstanding presenters have been scheduled to speak. Opening keynote speaker Brad Cohen was featured in last month’s Horizon. Read about some of the others in this issue. Full Story.

Districts Participate in Lesson Study Workshops
Lesson Study is an effective professional learning strategy that is recommended for all schools. Lesson studies are also an integral part of Florida’s newly approved Professional Development Protocol standards, and are required for all schools implementing the Differentiated Accountability Continuous Improvement Model. To assist districts with this, PAEC offered three lesson study workshops in April. Full Story.

PDC Celebrates Upcoming Retirements
The Joint Professional Development Council held their final meeting for this school year on April 15. In addition to a full agenda of updates, presentations and new information, a new Chair and Co-Chair were elected and meeting dates were set for 2010-2011. Members also took time to celebrate the upcoming retirements of four outstanding educators. Full Story.

PAEC Offers Summer Training for Teachers
The summer months afford prime opportunities for professional development for educators. Workshops in reading, math, science, social studies, American history and economics, as well as classes for gifted endorsement and inclusion strategies, are being offered for administrators and teachers at PAEC in June and July. Some of these are being provided through grants and collaborative partnerships with the Florida Department of Education, universities and other agencies. Full Story.

FBBR Sponsors Workshops at DOE
Children of employees of Florida’s Department of Education who were participating in the national Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day on April 22, not only got to see what their parents do each day on the job, but also were invited to participate in several educational opportunities. These included three family literacy workshops sponsored by PAEC’s Families Building Better Readers program, in collaboration with the Just Read, Florida! office. Full Story.

Each month a member of the PAEC Leadership Team nominates someone in their department who is making a unique contribution to PAEC and its mission to be “in the spotlight.” This month we honor Donna Doelman, a consultant with the Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources System. Full Story.
