The primary function of the Accountability and Assessment for Students with Disabilities (AASD) Project is to support the development and implementation of a statewide alternate assessment for students with significant cognitive disabilities. In collaboration with the test development contractor and the Florida Department of Education (FDOE), this project assists in the design of teacher training materials for the Florida Alternate Assessment; reproduces teacher training materials; and conducts "train- the-trainer" and teacher training in the implementation of the assessment statewide. The project will also develop and conduct training for parents. The Accountability and Assessment for Students with Disabilities project is funded through the Florida Department of Education.
In addition to supporting the development of the statewide alternate assessment and providing training and support to teachers around the state for its implementation, the project collaborates with the FDOE, the Accommodations and Modifications for Students with Disabilities Project, and practitioners from around the state to develop access points for the Science and Social Studies Sunshine State Standards for students with significant cognitive disabilities. Project staff were also instrumental in facilitating the development of Language Arts and Mathematics access points.
The Florida Alternate Assessment was developed by Measured Progress under contract and in close collaboration with the FDOE. The Florida Alternate Assessment was field tested with 4500 students across the state in the fall of 2007 with full implementation scheduled for the spring of 2008.
The Florida Alternate Assessment Participation Checklist was developed by the FDOE to assist individual educational plan (IEP) teams in making the assessment decision for students with disabilities. The FDOE memo describing the use of the checklist can be accessed at http://info.fldoe.org/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-1857/DPS%2004-085.pdf and the checklist at http://info.fldoe.org/docushare/dsweb/ApplySimpleSearch/ Collection-26.
