The 2010-2011 school year presented all of us with major challenges with school budget cuts, staff reductions and more. In spite of it all, some school districts and schools are preparing to end the school year with gains in student achievement. We celebrate the achievements of these schools, students and communities and remember, “High achieving schools don’t wait for storms to pass, they learn how to dance in the rain.” Their efforts and accomplishments are truly a manifestation of a school’s ability to engage groups of students whose hardships are common, but celebrations few and far between. Stephen believes the following: “teaching is not a skill, but a RELATIONSHIP and Leadership is more than being in charge of people, but more about putting a charge in people.” The participants will walk away from this presentation Captured and Inspired to do more than make a difference during these difficult times.
A recent study of effective principals’ instructional leadership published in The Handbook of Instructional Leadership (Blase & Blase, 2004) revealed characteristics of principals and teachers who had successfully built a school context for collaboration, equality and value for teaching and learning. Several of the key components for change that ultimately led to the positive "turn-around" of these schools were anchored by the element of "reciprocal-respect" and the fact that All students were valued the same. The central focus of respect and the development of establishing "win-win" relationships serve as the foundation in these highly successful schools. Don’t miss the opportunity to sit in on this exciting break-out session with Stephen Peters. You will leave with validation and affirmation, but more importantly, with practical strategies that can be implemented simply and immediately upon your return to your school.
