Adult High School

Calhoun County Adult School provides students an opportunity to achieve a traditional high school diploma by going through the required courses and earning the required credits.

The Student Progression Plan for the Calhoun County School District states:

"X. A.  Grade Classification of Students

  1. Students will not be classified by grade level.

  2. The open entry/open exit program allows credits to be earned by completing with 70% accuracy all work prescribed for each course.

  3. Students are placed on an appropriate instructional level based on performance on diagnostic tests.

B.  Mastery of Student Performance Standards:  Assignments of Credits

  1. The teacher and the director of the adult school shall certify documentation of mastery of the state student performance standards for the assignment of credit.

  2. The director of the adult school shall develop the procedures for certifying mastery of the student performance standards and for assigning credits...."

Unlike co-enrolled students, Adult High School students do not have a "seat-time" requirement, but academic requirements are parallel to those of the course description and the required standards as indicated by the Sunshine State Standards. Adult High School students are also required to take and pass the FCAT.

"G.  Standards for Graduation for Adult Education

There are two (2) methods of graduation from the Calhoun County Adult Education Program.  They are (1) Calhoun County Diploma and (2) State of Florida High School Diploma

1.  Calhoun County Diploma

Students who show mastery of the state student performance standards, complete the 24 course credits for Option 1 or the 18 credits for Option 2 & 3 as required by the State, and achieve a passing score on the FCAT will receive a standard diploma.  Options for graduation requirements for Adult Education students are:

a.  The 1/2 credit requirement in physical education is waived due to inadequate facilities.

b.  The required laboratory components in the science courses are also waived due to inadequate facilities.

2.  State of Florida High School Diploma

Students who pass the General Education Development Test (GED) in lieu of the normal graduation requirements will be granted a State of Florida High School Equivalency Diploma.

 Note to Parents and Students

Adult High School is NOT a means to completing high school more quickly unless the student to be enrolled is extremely motivated to do so and is of the age to do so.  While there are some characteristics of the Adult High School that makes it a place that "fits" the learner, the course requirements are the same of that of a regular high school student and in most cases take the same amount of time.

If your a student that hasn't excelled in high school, if attendance in regular school has been a problem area, exploration of the GED route of receiving a high school diploma may be your better choice.

Co-Enrollment Information

(per Student Progression Plan for the Calhoun County School District)

    "M. Adult School Credit

  1. A student needing 8 credits for graduation may attend adult school, upon the approval of the principal and guidance counselor.  The student may enroll in the Adult School Program, beyond the regular school day and earn 1 credit that will apply toward graduation requirements for the current academic year.  Additionally, and senior who, at the end of the first semester, needs 1/2 credit to meet the requirement for graduation, may attend Adult School and make up the needed 1/2 credit, if approved by the principal and guidance counselor.

  1. At the discretion of the principal and guidance counselor, out-of-district transfer students may be allowed to earn additional credits due to incompatibility of scheduled curriculum offerings."

Afternoon Class Attendance Information:

"Seat time requirement":  Students that are co-enrolled (enrolled both at their local high school and at the Adult School for the purposes above have a "seat-time" requirement.  This means that students must be in class the following number of hours and complete the academic work as specified by the course code description of the course as interpreted by the teacher 135 clock hours for a full credit course and 67 1/2 clock hours for a half credit course.

Students are not allowed to attend afternoon classes for more than two and a half (2 1/2) hours per day if they attend a full school day.

If there are extenuating circumstances that leave a student a few hours shy after their academic requirements are complete, there may be ways for students to complete hours outside of the classroom if documentation is provided and pre-approved. This is if and only if other attendance requirements are met.  Please click on the following link to read a letter sent to parents on February 13th, 2006 explaining the attendance requirements of co-enrolled students.
