On-Line Museum and Exhibit Visits

Museums provide a wealth of resources to fill a child's mind with wonder and discovery. Sadly, not all communities have access to museum resources. But today, more and more young learners are viewing collections of art, reliving important moments of the past, and marveling at the artifacts of prehistoric life through on-line museums.

These on-line museums provide visitors with a simulated "walk-through" their holdings and exhibits. Background information and links to related websites further enhance the educational potential of these sites. Often on-line museums feature standing or periodically changing special exhibits which are perfectly suited for educational "repurposing." Instructors can build lessons and activities around these exhibits. Some of the on-line sites even provide ancillary materials for classroom use.

Visit the links below for a look at the variety of on-line museum experiences. Note that some of these sites are open-ended collections that allow the student to wander about freely among the museum's holdings. Other on-line museums offer a more structured "guided" tour through the museum collections and special exhibits.
