Best Practices in Teaching Mathematics, developed by the Panhandle Area Educational Consortium, delivers information for instructional leaders through a videotaped professional discussion and a series of video vignettes. In the professional discussion, Dr. Ken Shaw, Associate Dean and Mathematics Education Associate Professor at Florida State University and Walton County Superintendent and former principal, Carlene Anderson, discuss what should be seen in a quality mathematics class where research-based best practices are being employed. The discussion is divided into segments and includes an exploration of the five major process standards in mathematics. These process standards, recognized by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, include: problem solving, communication, reasoning, connections and representation.
Video vignettes illustrate strategies supported by the research base as they are employed in the mathematics classroom. Also available is information regarding how a principal may promote implementation of best practices and a summary of the Classroom Walk-Through for Mathematics. |
