PAECís FloridaLearns STEM Scholars Initiative Gains National Attention
A new publication by the US Department of Education called Progress featured the FloridaLearns STEM Scholars Initiative in its very first issue. Progress is designed to highlight state and local innovative ideas, promising practices, lessons learned and resources informed by the implementation of K-12 education reforms.
The FloridaLearns STEM Scholars concept was designed and created by the Panhandle Area Educational Consortium (PAEC) and funded by the Florida Department of Educationís Race to the Top Award to respond to the state and national call to motivate and inspire students to pursue degrees and careers in the STEM disciplines. Now, in its third year the project has touched hundreds of gifted and talented 9th-12th grade students in Floridaís most rural school districts. PAEC, the Heartland Educational Consortium (HEC) and Northeast Educational Consortium (NEFEC) are working together to provide STEM experiences through advanced technology, curriculum and unique field experiences with regional and state colleges, public agencies, and private industry.
