If you spend time with PAEC’s Executive Director Paula Lovett Waller, you soon will learn she believes the key to a successful organization is relationships. The notion of a Florida Education Channel (FEC) talk show by teachers, for teachers proves her right.
It all started when Nicole Flesvig, the Florida Department of Education’s teacher liaison, visited PAEC last year. She was in Chipley to learn about professional development opportunities provided by the consortium’s FloridaLearns Academy and its electronic Professional Development Connections. Her tour took her by the FEC studio, where she met Rick Everitt, program coordinator for technology enhancement.
It was there Mr. Everitt casually proposed an original TV show expressly for teachers. And it was then that Ms. Flesvig jumped on the idea.
Taping for Teacher Talk, a new monthly program on FEC, began today. In addition to her experience as a classroom teacher, Ms. Flesvig is also an experienced television personality. She was the narrator for Visitors Television in Naples, Florida.
“I want to feature innovative teachers doing innovative things, in or out of the classroom,” she said. “I am looking for teachers who do things out of the ordinary, to celebrate their successes and inspire other teachers.”
The first episode of Teacher Talk is scheduled to broadcast Thursday, Feb. 8, at 10 a.m. and 10 p.m., CST. Ms. Flesvig’s first guest is Betty James, a 30-year veteran teacher from Gadsden County who is publishing her first children’s book. Mrs. James is presently serving as a readng coach at Gretna Elementary.
Mr. Everitt said, "We welcome any opportunity to collaborate with the DOE in providing teachers with information they need. We're looking forward to working with Nicole and the teachers she interviews.”
FEC is offered as a public access channel on DISH Network 61.5 channel 9418 and is carried by many cable providers. The FloridaLearns Academy, which comprises the FEC, the electronic Professional Development Connections (ePDC) and an extensive library of Web-based courses, is a PAEC initiative funded by a grant from the Florida Legislature.
