Teamwork focus of PAEC training for reading teachers, coaches
Prompted by the announcement for a Florida Department of Education grant targeting literacy, Pat Suggs, PAEC reading director/consultant, began to think about the challenges inherent in high school reading and envisioned a literacy institute focused on the needs of secondary students.
Since research shows that follow-up is essential to the success of any professional development initiative, she organized the workshop so that participants would have four successive days of intense learning over the summer, followed by three days throughout the school year to support the initial training.
The focus was on the following areas: student engagement, comprehension, vocabulary, and writing.
Participants received a set of professional books supporting the topics and were also immersed in young adult literature, nonfiction, and text sets during the workshop.
ReLeah Lent, educational consultant and author of Engaging Adolescent Learners and Literacy Learning Communities, facilitated the seven sessions.
More than sixty teachers and reading coaches representing nine PAEC districts participated in the training.
