Course Title: Phonemic Awareness

Course Requirements: Video Program and Assessment

Course Description: In this course, participants will learn to understand the difference between phonemes (sounds) and the letters and letter combinations that represent them. Participants will learn to select and instruct a range of phonemic awareness activities using an appropriate progression of phonological skills, such as tracking words in sentences, rhyming words, oral word repetition, syllable counting, onset-rime segmentation and blending, phoneme identification, segmentation, and blending.

Course Objectives:
Participants will gain awareness level knowledge about:
1.      Define phonological awareness and its components
2.      Understand why phoneme awareness is important
3.      Identify the progression of phoneme awareness skills
4.      Learn how to teach and model effective phonemic awareness
         strategies
5.      Know how to explicitly teach blending and segmenting
6.      Understand the importance of concepts about print and letter
         identification

Course Assessment:
A certificate of completion will be awarded to participants who successfully complete the online assessment after viewing the video program.
