Course Title: Reading in the Content Areas: It's Just Different
Course Requirements: Video Program and Assessment
Course Description: Today's classrooms are filled with students who have diverse abilities and needs. In order for all students to become proficient readers and learners, teachers must differentiate their instruction to meet the diversity. This workshop will explore differentiation of process in the various content areas where students struggle to meet the unique demands of reading content-specific text. The instructor will lead teachers through a series of tasks aimed at increasing student interest by building vocabulary and improving comprehension. Participants will develop knowledge about what makes reading in the content areas difficult and some strategies that can support all readers as they read difficult texts.
Course Objectives:
Participants will gain awareness level knowledge about why reading in the content areas is different and more difficult through exploration of the following:
1. Text/assignment features
2. Reader variables
3. Pre, during, and post reading strategies
Course Assessment:
A certificate of completion will be awarded to participants who successfully complete the online assessment after viewing the video program.

Professional Development Points: 2
Completing all activities provided would take approximately 10 hours. Therefore, it's recommended that 10 professional development points be awarded (2 for watching the video and completing the assessment, 8 for completing all follow-up activities). However, follow-up activities may be further enhanced for additional professional development credit. This is a local option.

It is recommended that participants in the video course complete follow-up activities to deepen their knowledge and skills. When these activities are completed in accordance with local staff development guidelines, participants may be able to earn additional professional development credit. Contact your local staff development office for determining how you might receive credit for completing the video program and additional credit for completing follow-up activities.
