Taking the "Dense" Out of Density
(Grade 2-6)
Shannon C'de Baca
Subject Area: Science
Course Title: Taking the "Dense" Out of Density
Course Requirements: Video Program and Assessment
Course Description: Teachers need a richer experience with content that is focused, connected to applicable mathematics, and appropriately targeted to the developmental level of their students. Since all content cannot be taught in a single session, it is necessary to teach just a piece of rich content, along with a method that can be used to master other content pieces. The short rigorous tasks in this workshop illustrate the interconnectedness of the mathematical and scientific worlds by prompting teachers to collect both quantitative and qualitative data, and to use both to reach a rich understanding about the nature of the physical sciences. Participants will walk away from this session with a clearer understanding of how to approach the NRC standards for science education.
Course Objectives:
Participants will gain awareness level knowledge about:
1. the nature of the science topic of "density"
2. an effective process for teaching difficult science concepts
3. hands on activities for teaching difficult science concepts
Course Assessment:
A certificate of completion will be awarded to participants who successfully complete the online assessment after viewing the video program.
Alignment with Standards:
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (ages 11-15)
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (ages 14-18)
Mid-continent Regional Educational Laboratory Standards
National Science Education Standards
Professional Development Points: 2
Additional points may be earned through completion of follow-up activities.
Additional Helps: Follow-up activities and resources
It is recommended that participants in the video course complete follow-up activities to deepen their knowledge and skills. When these activities are completed in accordance with local staff development guidelines, participants may be able to earn additional professional development credit. Contact your local staff development office for determining how you might receive credit for completing the video program and additional credit for completing follow-up activities.
Follow-up Activity 1: Selecting content
Follow-up Activity 2: Unpacking the content
Follow-up Activity 3: Assessing the content
