Mike Barney & Lynn Figurate
Course Description:
In this course, team members Lynn Figurate and Mike Barney use a direct instructional model to present vocabulary research and effective strategies useful in the elementary classroom. Topics covered include direct and indirect methods of vocabulary instruction. Suggested follow-up activities are provided to deepen participants' knowledge and skills and to guide classroom application.
Lynn Figurate, Jr.
Lynn Figurate, Jr. has taught third grade at Manuel L. Real Elementary School in California for the past 7 years. As a result of dramatic increases in API in every demographic subgroup over the past 6 years, Mr. Figurate has been afforded the opportunity to present at a variety of conferences on collaboration and data analysis. Utilizing district benchmark assessments and state STAR results, he has assisted his colleagues by establishing schoolwide goals, implementing standards-based instruction, and developing collaborative lesson plans to pace instruction. Recently, Mr. Figurate was spotlighted by the U.S. Department of Education for his efforts in helping all students succeed.
Mike Barney
Mike Barney has been teaching children and adults since 1989. He has served as a college ESL teacher, K-8 Language Arts teacher, primary teacher, project teacher, mentor teacher, technology mentor, assistant principal, principal, and an independent language arts and technology consultant. He is now a reading coordinator for the Riverside County Office of Education in California, where he works directly with students, teachers, principals, and district administrators to analyze situations and to implement scientifically researched strategies in classrooms through a hands-on process. Mr. Barney has authored two children's books and is recognized as an outstanding literacy teacher by the American Literacy Corporation.
