Paul Kimmelman
Course Description:
Paul Kimmelman discusses issues related to teachers as leaders. He points out the need for encouraging teachers to step out and assume leadership roles that are not necessarily administrative in function. Advocacy for quality curriculum and mentoring peers for success are key roles for teacher leaders. Paul shares the characteristics of successful teacher leaders and points out ways to recognize the potential. He also shares various types of leadership styles and theories.
Paul L. Kimmelman
Paul L. Kimmelman is Senior Advisor to the CEO and Executive Director of Learning Point Associates/NCREL and has served as a consultant to the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority in England and Senior Consultant to Project 2061 Professional Development Programs of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He worked in K-12 education for over 30 years as a teacher, assistant high school principal, middle school principal, assistant superintendent, superintendent and has been an adjunct professor at several colleges and universities. Currently he is also working at Argosy University as an adjunct professor.
As superintendent in Lima, Ohio, he worked to help the district successfully comply with a federal desegregation order. He served as President of the First in the World Consortium when he was a superintendent in Illinois. The Consortium was a collaborative group of school districts that were the first non-country group to participate in the Third International Mathematics and Science Study. The group was recognized by President Clinton and Secretary of Education Richard Riley when they visited Illinois to announce their world-class successful work.
Dr. Kimmelman has authored numerous articles and publications on education and presented at national and state education meetings. He is co-author of the book, Achieving World-Class Schools: Mastering School Improvement Using a Genetic Model, released by Christopher-Gordon Publishing in 2002. He was appointed by former U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley to the National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching chaired by former Senator and
astronaut John Glenn and served on the TIMSS Technical Review Panel. He was also appointed to serve on the Teacher Assistance Corps by U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige.

Katherine J. Nolan, Ph.D.
Katherine Nolan is the key executive in charge of developing services, tools, and professional development training that help teachers and administrators meet and exceed school improvement goals. Dr. Nolan is the former director of the Commission on Improving Curriculum-Based Assessment in Chicago Public Schools, which was housed at Erikson Institute, Chicago. There she directed the development of a system of curriculum-based assessments to improve teaching and learning for diverse students. She also served as executive director, Project Align, for the City Colleges of Chicago, and director, Rethinking Accountability, Annenberg Institute for School Reform, Providence, R.I. Dr. Nolan was director of teaching and learning for the Philadelphia Education Fund, a partner in the Children Achieving initiative of the School District of Philadelphia. She also served as assistant director of State and Local Relations and as coordinator for international benchmarking for the New Standards Project. Dr. Nolan has taught at the elementary and middle school levels, as well as at several colleges and universities.
